Top seniors from all 10 Corona-Norco Unified School District high schools were recognized Tuesday at the first of several Student of the Month events in Riverside County.
A ceremony recognizing the students’ achievements took place at 9 a.m. at Corona High School, 1150 W. 10th St. in Corona. It was co-organized by the Riverside County Office of Education, Corona-Norco USD and the Corona-Norco Council Parent Teacher Association.
The district includes schools in Eastvale, Norco, Corona and Temescal Valley.
“The Student of the Month events are inspirational reminders of the life-changing impact that education has on our students — many of whom have been part of our public schools since they were in Kindergarten and are now only months away from graduating and pursuing their post-secondary dreams and represent our county, our state, and our nation,” county Superintendent of Schools Edwin Gomez said in a statement. “I’m excited to launch this excellence recognition program with our partners in Corona-Norco USD to celebrate their students of the month as we do across Riverside County.”
In multiple areas throughout the county, a variety of community organizations regularly highlight students of the month in individual school districts. From November to April, educators and staff members at each high school in the Corona-Norco district will honor one senior student “based on how they embody character, integrity, a passion for learning, active involvement in school life, sports, and community service, or have displayed remarkable resilience in the face of life’s challenges while maintaining a commitment to education,” according to the Office of Education.
“We are thrilled to partner with RCOE and our wonderful PTA for this Student of the Month program to highlight our incredible students who continue to inspire us with their resilience, determination, and hard work,” school district Superintendent Sam Buenrostro said in a statement. “Their stories continue to remind us of our why and keep us committed to ensuring every student has the knowledge, skills, motivation, and resilience to thrive in a diverse global community.”
The Corona-Norco Unified Students of the Month are:
- Giovanni Raymond Klaib, Academy of Innovation
- Faoaaai Gatoloai, Centennial High School
- Hannah Hass, Corona High School
- James Glenny, Eastvale STEM Academy
- Andrew Allen, Eleanor Roosevelt High School
- Jared Espinosa, John F. Kennedy Middle College High School
- Jake Javier Ochoa, Lee V. Pollard High School
- Sergio Sanchez Mendez, Norco High School
- Angelique Denali Huerta-Mendez, Orange Grove High School
- Landon Christensen, Santiago High School
Events throughout the school year include:
- Nov. 19 at Corona High School;
- Jan. 21 at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale;
- March 18 at John F. Kennedy Middle College High School in Norco; and
- April 24 at Eagle Glen Golf Course in Corona for the Student of the Year Award ceremony.
In late March, students of the month mat apply for the Student of the Year Award by submitting scholarship applications, officials said. Students of the year will be selected based on “outstanding academic achievements, active participation in high school life, or their inspiring journey of self-improvement and transformation,” according to the Office of Education.
