Lotus Festival to showcase traditions of India at Echo Park

With Echo Park Lake’s lotus flowers expected to be in full bloom next month, L.A. City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell Friday touted the city’s Lotus Festival, which celebrates Indian culture and this year will mark India’s 75th year of independence.
“Each year, as the lotus flowers of Echo Park Lake reach full bloom, we welcome nearly 120,000 visitors to this signature city park in the 13th District,” O’Farrell, who represents the neighborhood, said Friday.
“This year, we celebrate the rich traditions of India and take time to soak in the rich diversity of Asian arts and culture here in Los Angeles.”
The Lotus Festival began in 1972, and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks said it is one of the city’s largest festivals.
This year’s festival takes place the weekend of July 9-10 from noon to 9 p.m.
People can enjoy food, drinks, activities, dragon boat races and booths with clothing, jewelry, artwork, crafts and more.
“The Department of Recreation and Parks is excited to be hosting the Lotus Festival back in person this year,” said Mike Shull, general manager.
“The celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities will showcase India in a communal setting, bustling with entertainment and food, cultivating cultural appreciation and awareness.”
