Authorities on Saturday continued to investigate a deadly shooting in which a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy escaped serious injury after being shot in the chest while exchanging gunfire with a suspect in Coachella.
The suspect was killed.
The shooting occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 51700 block of Cesar Chavez Street, near Bagdouma Park, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, while the deputy was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
The deputy is expected to recover and was saved from serious injuries by a ballistic vest, sheriff’s officials said.
Authorities were investigating the events that led up to the shooting, and no further details were immediately available.
