A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday when he was struck by an unmarked Department of Homeland Security vehicle on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway at Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake, the California Highway Patrol reported.
CHP officers were called at 2:15 a.m. and found the fatal collision, CHP Officer Patrick Kimball told City News Service.
The man died at the scene, the CHP reported. Information on his identity was not immediately available.
The driver was a Homeland Security officer and remained at the scene, according to Kimball. It was not immediately known if the DHS officer was on duty, according to Kimball.
The incident triggered a SIG alert and led to a closure of the freeway for several hours, according to the CHP.
Another vehicle was also involved, but it was not immediately known to what extent, Kimball said. Several freeway lanes were closed while an investigation was conducted into the circumstances of the crash.
