San Marino Unified School District voters approve parcel tax extension

Voters in the San Marino Unified School District have approved an extension of a parcel tax that was set to expire Wednesday.

According to results of Tuesday’s special election, 74% of voters backed the extension of the Measure E parcel tax, which generates about $4 million a year. The measure required support from two-thirds of voters to be approved.

The $968 parcel tax was originally passed in 2009, then renewed by voters in 2015. It was set to expire Wednesday, something district officials said would have been financially “devastating” for the school system.

According to the district’s website, the tax funding supports 34 teachers, three counselors and four technology-support positions.

The measure includes exemptions for eligible seniors and some Social Security recipients, and for owners of contiguous parcels.

The extension approved by voters Tuesday keeps the tax in effect for another six years.
