

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California health officials have issued a travel advisory during COVID-19 discouraging nonessential trips out of California. However, an annual conference attended by state lawmakers this week has been likened to a “schmooze fest.”
The annual conference is hosted by the Independent Voter Project , a nonprofit organization that “seeks to re-engage nonpartisan voters and promote nonpartisan election reform through initiatives, litigation, and voter education.”
This year’s conference is taking place at the Fairmont Kea Lani Hotel in Maui, Hawaii. This event comes on the heels of Gov. Gavin Newsom not only placing 94% of California in the most restrictive COVID-19 tier , but also weighing the possibility of a curfew to tackle the spread of COVID-19 in California.
It is also less than a week since the governor apologized for his attendance of a lobbyist’s 50 th birthday party in Yountville , an event that had 12 people, which is far fewer than the conference taking place in Maui.
