This week’s City Manager’s Update from InterimCity Manager/Fire Chief Brad Dover includes a brief video explaining why thecity wishes to increases the local sales tax to 10.25%, the maximum allowed bylaw. The current local tax rate is 9.5%. This increase would keep localtaxes in the community.

As an example that the amount of money that goesout of the community does not equal the amount that returns to the community, the video explains that since 2017 Monrovians have paid more than $5 million tothe county for the homeless tax, but only $30,000 has come back to thecommunity.

This week the city has announced severalcommunity meetings regarding Measure K to allow citizens or ask questions aboutthe issue. On Saturday, Oct. 19 there will be a MAP educational meetingabout the subject at 11 a.m. at the Community Center.  On Tuesday Oct. 22there will be a general community meeting in the City Council Chambers at 7 p.m.

The Historic Preservation Commission will bereviewing the issue on Oct. 23 again in Council Chambers at 7:30 p.m.

The city made presentations to two senior clubsthis week.
