The annual LA Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) involved about 30 volunteers who went out on the evening of January 23rd for the Point-In-Time Homeless Count. Even L.A. County Supervisor Katherine Barger participated in Monrovia’s survey. The preliminary count is 35 homeless individuals, down from 39 the previous year.
The data collected in this annual event is used to help track changes in the homeless population. It is also used to improve programs for the homeless population and to “deploy appropriate levels of resources to serve those who are homeless,” according to City Manager Oliver Chi’s weekly update.
That same update of January 30th went on the outline the overall approach the City has taken to the issue of the homeless in this area. The update listed the five prongs of the city’s response:
-Regular and Consistent Community Outreach
-Coordinate a Hepatitis A/Public Health Community Meeting in February 2018
– Schedule a Study Session with the City Council in Late February 2018 / Early March 2018 to Discuss Possible Rule Changes
-Press Forward with Proposed Infrastructure Upgrades
-Continue to Coordinate Both a Robust Law Enforcement Response AND Develop Enhanced Social Service Contacts
For details on these steps, please go to the City Managers Update by accessing the city’s website, clicking on Your Government, then on City Manager’s Update. When the current edition of the Update appears on the screen, click on the link to 2018 updates and then on the one dated January 30th.
