The city council met in a closed session meeting this past week to discuss the demand letter that it received from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), requesting that Monrovia changed to district-based city council elections.
Given the nature of the request that was made, the city is currently coordinating with the city attorney’s office in preparing an initial response to MALDEF.
With the discussions that have occurred to date, it would be appropriate to note that the city is taking the issues raised by MALDEF very seriously, especially given that Monrovia has had such a rich history of electing individuals that represent a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives to serve on the city council.
