Assemblymember Medina’s Statement on UC Audit and Findings

Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) released the following statement regarding an April 5 press conference on the Legislature’s response to the UC audit:

“I want to thank my colleagues for joining me today in showing strong concern in light of the State Auditor’s report. I have long been concerned about the growing number of nonresident students, and what that growth means for access for California students. The findings in this audit reinforce our concerns. It is unacceptable that highly-qualified California students are being turned away from UC. And it is unconscionable that admitted nonresident students may be less qualified than California students who were denied admission.

“This year, Assemblymember McCarty and I are continuing legislative avenues to ensure UC’s nonresidents are not displacing California students. We joint authored AB 1711, to cap the amount of nonresidents at UC. As Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, I will continue to advance policies that promote the interests of California’s students.”

Assemblymember Medina proudly represents California’s 61st Assembly District, which consists of Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Perris.
