The Monrovia Public Library has a new mural. – Photo by The Monrovia Public Library
Last Friday, March 11, the library hosted a community celebration to unveil our newest piece of public art, entitled “Sunday Drive.” The artwork, which is an acrylic mural painted onto the bindings of recycled books, was a project led by Youth Services Librarian Annette Simpson, and was made possible through the support of many community partners, including the Art in Public Places Committee, the Monrovia Library Foundation, the Friends of the Monrovia Public Library, and CCA Woodworks.
Mike Stilkey, the artist who created the new mural, has always been attracted to painting and drawing on various recycled items, from record covers to books. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally. Stilkey is a Sierra Madre resident and an avid Monrovia Public Library user who frequents Monrovia’s library with his son. And as the attached picture illustrates, the event was terrific and the mural is quite fantastic! We hope that you will take the time to stop by, enjoy the art, and guess how many books were used in this masterpiece!
