The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) recently granted a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to the cancer program at Methodist Hospital of Southern California.
“We are extremely pleased to receive this accreditation from the American College of Surgeons,” said Ginamarie Farino, director of Oncology Services at Methodist Hospital.
“This recognition is a true reflection of the hard work of the skilled doctors, nurses and staff at Methodist Hospital who provide compassionate, high quality care to our patients every day.”
To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet or exceed 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation is only awarded to a facility that exceeds standard requirements at the time of its triennial survey.
As an accredited cancer center, Methodist Hospital takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among many specialists including surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary approach is recognized nationally as a way to improve patient outcomes, said Farino.
“At Methodist Hospital, we have worked hard to build a place where cancer patients can find a comforting environment that encourages them to focus on healing,” Farino said. “In addition, the hospital’s approach to care includes treating the ‘whole person,’ which means by tending to the patient’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Treatment is not just about healing the physical body with medication and procedures but about using all resources to improve the spirit as well.”
