A Pasadena man has been charged with killing his former girlfriend whose body was found in her car in Monrovia in June.

Jose Roberto Turner, 47, appeared last Monday at Pasadena Superior Court so he could be arraigned on the June 10 murder of Monrovia resident LaJoya McCoy. The arraignment was continued to today.

Relatives reported McCoy missing to Monrovia police on June 15 after the 31-year-old didn’t show up for several appointments. Police found evidence of foul play at McCoy’s apartment and called in the sheriff’s homicide detectives.

Investigators did not disclose what evidence was discovered at the dead woman’s Monrovia residence.

McCoy’s body was found June 16 in her car parked in the 200 block of West Cypress Avenue in Monrovia, a few blocks from her home.

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau declined to discuss the motive behind the slaying.

Turner and McCoy were together for about 10 years and have two children, according to Lewandowski.

“They’ve been separated the last two years,” he said.

Lewandowski said the couple’s children are safe with other family members.

Authorities have not disclosed McCoy’s cause of death.

Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said there is a security hold on the autopsy report so he cannot discuss details of the case.

The prosecution is asking $1 million bail.

Turner, who was arrested Aug. 27, 2015, in Pasadena remains in custody without bail.
