Well over two years ago, two home brewers enlisted the help of a “mad scientist” from UC San Diego, and the idea of creating a local microbrewery was born. However, it was just two years ago that they brought that dream to life, opening Pacific Plate Brewery (a reference to the tectonic plate that periodically give this area its signature earthquake). They will celebrate that second anniversary on Aug 29.

Steven Kooshian and Jonathan Parada were those home brewers and they drafted Steve Cardenas, who had started work on his doctorate from UC Irvine. The home brewers had met at LegalZoom, the dotcom that assists people with legal paperwork – what else were a History major from UCLA (Kooshian) and a film maker from USC (Parada) to do. This unlikely trio created Monrovia’s first artisan microbrewery.

To celebrate the anniversary, Pacific Plate will hold a day-long celebration on Saturday, Aug 29 from noon until 9 p.m. There will be a complete selection of the ales for which they are becoming well known in the area including Copa d’Oro, Cardamon Ginger Saison, German Kolsch, a dry hopped IPA, and Dunkelweissen. In addition they will have their Beloved Horchata Stout on tap and on Nitro. Of course, there will also be a Second Anniversary Ale, this time a Belgian Triple.

If that were not enough reason, there will be a classic and Hot Rod Car Show, and Big Slim Hickory Creek B-B-Q for sale from noon to 9 p.m. Live Doo-Wop Music will also be starting at 4 p.m. Pacific Plate Brewing is located at 1999 S. Myrtle Avenue.
