Concert Features Lalo’s “Symphonie Espagnole,” and Haydn’s Symphony #104

On Friday, May 15, at 8 p.m. the Pasadena Community Orchestra will feature Aubree Oliverson.

Seventeen-year-old Aubree Oliverson has been performing solos with various groups and winning awards for her playing since she was 11 years old. She was featured on the NPR program, From the Top, twice, and soloed in Carnegie Hall at age 12. She is concertmistress of the Colburn Academy’s “Virtuosi.” Oliverson performs Lalo’s fiery Symphonie Espagnole, inspired by the colorful and virtuosic playing of Spanish violinst Pablo Sarasate. The piece is a vivid evocation of Spain, as well as a show-piece for the violinist. Haydn’s Symphony 104, the “London” symphony, is his last and arguably his best-loved. Europe’s greatest composer of his time gives us a solemn opening fanfare, and then takes us on a joyous ride that keeps picking up catchy melodies, momentum and speed, leaving the listener breathless and wanting more. Audience members may meet the soloist, Music Director, and other musicians at a reception following the concert. Admission is free, and no reservations are necessary. The performance is in the sanctuary of First Church of the Nazarene, 3700 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena (just west of Michillinda Avenue) Friday, May 15, at 8 p.m.. Ample free parking, wheelchair accessible. Further information: Please contact (626) 445-6708 or www.pcomusic.org.
