16 Taiwan Youth Ambassadors visit San Marino; perform at USC By Terry Miller The 2014 Taiwan Youth Ambassadors delegation visited Los Angeles last week and presented a special cultural performance at Tutor Campus Center Ballroom of the University of Southern California (USC) on Saturday. Before the performance, the young Taiwanese Ambassadors visited San Marino City Hall and got a chance to meet local firefighters and police in a prosperous city in which a large percentage of residents are of Asian descent. The talented and inquisitive group of young men and women first met with City Manager John Schaefer in council chambers where they were briefed on the fine art of local politics in the United States. From there, the Mayor, Eugene Sun, and other city officials gave the young Ambassadors the tour of city departments, including fire and police.
After going through a demanding selection process and undergoing intensive training for several months, the 16 Youth Ambassadors, who primarily major in art, music, and dance at Taiwan’s universities and graduate schools, headed up a cultural performance tour throughout several cities in September. In addition to Los Angeles, the Youth Ambassadors will also perform in San Francisco, St. Christopher, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent. In their 90-minute performance, the young performers utilize their creativity and inspiration to combine Chinese opera, modern drama, contemporary and classical dance into a seamless performance. They hope to convey to the American audience the depth and range of Chinese culture through a youthful and uniquely Taiwanese performance. In addition to performances, they visited universities and cultural organizations in LA to share their art form.
