Dear Editor:
Connecting Los Angeles residents, especially our children, to the outdoors is vitally important. It’s wonderful to have the San Gabriel Mountains right here in our backyard, but frankly, access and facilities are not what they should be. And they are certainly not up to the task of handling the demands of a major metropolitan area.
That’s why Congresswoman Chu’s legislation to create a national recreation area is so timely. It raises the profile of our mountains with the powers that be in Washington, so that improving facilities and educational programs become a priority for Congress and the President.
My hope is that soon the San Gabriels will be viewed as a model of what an urban forest can be. There are so few places like it anywhere. We should do what we can to make sure it is protected.
Thank you Congresswoman Chu.
