The Bike Train – Community Bike Ride – Oct 27

More than 300 people are expected to take part in BikeSGV’s monthly community bike ride on Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 9am-2pm.  The Bike Train was awarded a Community Benefits grant by Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center to address obesity in the San Gabriel Valley region by empowering people to bicycle as a viable means of transportation, physical activity and recreation.

This month’s Bike Train is significantly special due to the variety of activities:

• BikeSGV Mobile Bike Pit Stop – Professional mechanics will be standing at the ready to provide free bike repair and maintenance to those without functioning bikes.
• Bike Train – A scenic, 15-mile round trip, family-friendly bike ride that’ll head North toward the Azusa Canyons.
• El Encanto Presentation – The Bike Train turn around point will incorporate a presentation by the Watershed Conservation Authority about the Hilda Solis Overlook Park and other park projects in the region.
• Get Fit Club –  A series of creative exercises that will include exciting Zumba and yoga for the non-cycling community.
• Healthy Barbeque – Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez is sponsoring a free, healthy barbeque for all participants immediately following all physical activities.
• San Gabriel Valley Bicycle Master Plan – Stop by the information booth to learn more about regional efforts to create a bike-friendly San Gabriel Valley.
• Bike Raffle – Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has graciously donated three bicycles to help promote recreation bicycling.  Participation in any physical activity is required to qualify for a raffle ticket.

 

Over the past two years the Bike Train has been instrumental in educating community members about the myriad personal and environmental benefits of bicycling while introducing the many valuable connections provided by the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel bike paths also known as the Emerald Necklace. Bicycle commuters utilize the paths to access the Metro Transit Center in El Monte while recreation riders use the paths to access and enjoy the various parks along the routes such as Whittier Narrows, Peck Rd. Park, Lashbrook Park, Bosque De Rio Hondo and much more. More importantly, the Emerald Necklace serves as the backbone to the regional bikeway network and planning efforts of the San Gabriel Valley Bicycle Master Plan which aims to encourage healthy and more active lifestyles by creating an interconnected bicycle network that is safe and easily accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
