Arcadia High School students and our Director Steven Volpe and musical director Dr. Stephen Pu and Choreographer Jeremy Thompson will be will be performing the “Toledo Surprise” scene which they performed as part of the Drowsy Chaperone the new Arcadia High School Performing Arts Center.
Arcadia Mayor Mickey Segal said “The City of Arcadia is extremely proud to congratulate the Arcadia High School Theatre Department on being select as one of 4 high schools in Southern California to perform at the Pantages Theatre. This honor is well deserved and the Arcadia community offers best wishes to these students and staff as the begin this new opportunity in their performing careers.”
The best actor and best actress winners will then go to New York to compete with students from the Eastern Half of the United States to perform on a Broadway Stage!
Instituted by the Nederlander Organization, THE JERRY HERMAN AWARDS is a celebration dedicated to recognizing, encouraging, and rewarding achievements and excellence in high school musical theatre, as well as focusing much needed attention on the meaningful work being done by the dedicated arts teachers of Southern California. It is the Pantages ceremony that will determine who will go to New York for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as The Jimmy’s, which take place annually at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway in New York City. Students receive opportunities for merit scholarships, professional advancement and other prizes.
THE JERRY HERMAN AWARDS are presented to winners in multiple categories. Every year the winners of Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress at the Pantages will also each receive a check for $1,000 plus an all-expenses paid trip to New York. While in New York the winners will experience five days of private coaching, master classes and rehearsals with theatre professionals. This experience will lead up to the grand finale, as they appear before a panel of industry experts selecting exceptional students to complete for The Jimmy™ Awards for Best Performance by an Actress and Actor as part of the National High School Musical Theater Awards, which culminate in a performance at Nederlander’s Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.
The winners in New York for best actor and best actress each receive a $10,000 Scholarship.
