LA County Fair Celebrating 90 Years
Opens Friday, Aug 31
Fairplex Garden Miniature Railroad a Big Hit
Starting Friday and continuing through Sept. 30, the Pomona Fairground is hosting the annual Los Angeles County Fair featuring music, petting zoo, horse racing and lots of truly unique food. But perhaps one of the lesser known attractions of the fair is the Fairplex Garden Railroad.
For kids of all ages this incredible collection of model railways and scenes started in 1924 and moved to the fairgrounds in 1935. Utilizing hand made replicas of real railroad equipment. With 10,000 feet of track running through a very creative look at California history from the 1850’s on, the trains and scenes depict a bygone era that’ll bring the kid back in all who witness this hidden treasure in the fairgrounds.
Run entirely by volunteers, the Fairplex Garden Railroad was started by Homer and Herman Howard using ½ scale from plans provided by the original railroad companies.
The miniature railroad which has bee featured in national and international publications has operated continuously with the exception of 1942-1947 during World War II.
