Everywhere you look in Old Town there is evidence of birthday party planning. The familiar birthday cake pole banners are going up on Myrtle Avenue highlighting some of
the folks who put the fun in the upcoming events; flyers are getting stuffed into merchandise bags, adding to the sense of anticipation; local volunteers are meeting and the new Samson the Bear images have been set in place.
If you’re counting the days, Monrovia’s 126th Birthday Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, May 19th, will begin in 8 days plus or minus a few hours. Those few hours (of sleep!) could make a big difference to the hearty souls who plan to participate in the 7 a.m. Fountain to the Falls Race. Thank you Quota Club of Monrovia who will offer peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the returning runners!
The theme of this year’s parade is “Monrovia – One neighborhood for Everyone”, and the Hometown Grand Marshall is Old Town business owner and Kiwanian extraordinaire, Julie Gentile. The Blue Star Families will proudly share the title of “Celebrity Grand Marshall”.The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and will travel north on Myrtle Avenue. Old Town streets will be fully re-opened by 11:30 a.m. Activities in Library Park will begin at approximately11 a.m. and continue through the day, ending with a free concert on the Myrtle Avenue sideof the park from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. featuring “The Totally Hip Replacements”.
The Monrovia Day Committee, partnering with Community Services, has been hard at work to plan the park events which will include a Mini Health Fair, the Kiwanis Cupcake Contest, the MAP Min-Conference, a Friends of the Library Book Sale, the Monrovia USD Spelling Bee and many other fun activities and booths.
Free events and entertainment along the Avenue in Old Town begin at 12 noon and willinclude strolling magicians, a barbershop quartet, fiddlers, banjo players, a stilt-walker, face painting and free kid’s craft tables. There will also be several “photo standees” available for some fun picture-taking. At 5:30 the Old Town Merchants are pleased to
sponsor a Line Dancing Event in Library Park. No need to pre-register – just show up and be ready to dance!
