Today, according to UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, 42% percent of children in Los Angeles County are overweight or obese. In addition, 47% of California’s 4th graders are reading below grade level, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. Furthermore, when the school year ends, the physical and educational health of many kids worsens.
“At Healthy Kids Day, we’re helping parents take on summer by taking steps to ensure that their kids stay physically and intellectually active,” said Damon Colaluca, Executive Director, Santa Anita Family YMCA. “With summer just around the corner, there is no better time than now to begin developing a healthy routine that helps kids be healthier and sharper for when the next school year begins.”
The Y’s event will take place at Recreation Park in Monrovia from 9:00am to 1:00pm and will feature activities such as fitness and cooking demonstrations, games for kids and families, prizes, raffles, craft activities, face painting and more.
